I had the chance to talk with Adam, Will, and Sam this week while they were On The Lot working on their next shorts. I found out that they are actually staying where Gilligan’s Island used to film. I loved all three shorts last week and look forward to watching tonights episode which I had to DVR. Here are the interviews from Monday. If you have any burning questions for any of the cast please click contact us and send them on in.
Interview with Adam:
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): So what’s the living arrangement like with you guys? Are you sleeping On The Lot or do they shuffle you off somewhere at night?
A. Adam Stein (On The Lot): We are all living together here. There are 2 houses on the lot. I was told we are staying right where Gilligan’s Island was filmed, but the only thing left is the lagoon and pond. When there were 18 of us we shared 2 houses. Now we are all in one house but we each get out own room.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): What did you think about Kenny and Mateen leaving the lot last week?
A. Adam Stein (On The Lot): It’s hard for us to predict how the votes will go down each week. Sometimes we guess based on what judges say or our personality on stage. We all know one another so well it’s hard for us to know what America is thinking. I think Kenny was less a surprise. His films are so unique to him and not so much mainstream. Mateen was such a cool guy it was sad to see him go. Kenny was very a cool guy and always skateboarding wherever we went. He is a good kid but his films are not for mainstream America. I think Mateen’s action film was great.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): Talk to me about your last short film entitled “Girl Trouble,” Where did you come up with the idea and how?
A. Adam Stein (On The Lot): I wanted to work with actors more. My two prior films had lots of special effects and while we filmed we were racing against the clock trying to get all these crazy things to happen. For my next film I wanted to focus on the characters and dialogue, I knew that going into it. I was trying to think of what might be funny to most people. “Tootsie” and “Some Like It Hot” were comedies with guys dressed in drag so I thought that might be a good angle to go for. I wanted to do a twist on “hey that girl is a guy” and wanted to make it super obvious.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): What did you think of the judge’s critique?
A. Adam Stein (On The Lot): I think they liked it. I was nervous. I was worried since I wasn’t going so complex and with this film. It was simply about 3 people in a room. Now that we have so much production at our disposal I wondered how this would go over since it’s just 3 guys in a room talking.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): I noticed the actors in all of your shorts have appeared in other movies, TV, and film projects. How do you chose them, how is it to work with them?
A. Adam Stein (On The Lot): Its nice to work with them since we can write scripts with the actors in mind and request the cast we want. At times it is a challenge since there may be roles the actors might not fit. When I filmed my Caveman short film I needed actors who could do something very specific. It isn’t easy to act like a caveman and pull it off for the viewers. Not everyone can doit, but it worked well. It’s weird not doing auditions for these films; in all my prior films I audition actors for them.
We have a pool of actors we can choose from, maybe 15 – 20. We also don’t pick locations. I feel like if I can make a good film in 5 days and can’t pick actors and locations I can make a great film being able to pick both.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com) What was your favorite short (besides your own) from last week:?
A. Adam Stein (On The Lot): I liked Jason’s short film, I thought it was a great movie. I admired how he put his personality into the film and made a very personable film. It was a personal story and I aspire to do films like this.

Interview With Will:
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): What did you think about Kenny and Mateen leaving the lot?
A. Will Bigham (On The Lot): It’s never too early to see everyone go since I want be last one standing, but everyone is a very talented film maker. Everyone is telling great stories and it is up to America to see what film style they want to see.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): Talk to me about you last short film, where did you come up with the idea?
A. Will Bigham (On The Lot): I got it from brainstorming. When I heard it was romantic comedy week I was thinking how can I do this and what point of view should I use. I was staring at my lamp while I thinking about it. Then I thought to myself, what if I told a lamp love story.
This was the first time I worked with puppeteers and it was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. On the first day of shooting I only had 5 shots at end of day, it was taking too long to film each shot. The puppeteers finished making the lamps about 3 hours prior to shooting so they had not time to rehearse. So my first day ended up being more a rehearsal day. We got 10 shots out of 35. I was sweating it out and didn’t think I would get it finished.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): What did you think of the judge’s critique?
A. Will Bigham (On The Lot): I think Carrie finally accepted the fact you that don’t have to have dialogue to have a good movie. I am trying to take the judges advice the best I can but I want to tell the story I would like to tell my way. From here on out there will be more dialogue so Carrie should like that. I think she accepted my lack of film dialogue and enjoyed my last story.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): What was your favorite short (besides your own) from last week:?
A. Will Bigham (On The Lot): I really enjoyed Sam’s film about the wedding invitation stamps. It spoke to me since I have had similar augments with my wife. The film should have had better reaction from the judges.
Interview With Sam
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): What did you think about Kenny and Mateen leaving the lot?
A. Sam Friedlander (On The Lot): I think at this stage it is hard to tell who will go home. Of course I wanted to stay and am glad I did, but you don’t want anyone to go since we are all such good friends. It’s hard since we don’t know how the audience is voting. It may not be just a single film that might get us eliminated; it could be our overall body of work. The judges critique is great and very helpful but it’s the audience that I look for on stage and how they respond. You can tell with applause if the audience was being polite or loved the film.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): Talk to me about Key Witness, where you came up with the idea…
A. Sam Friedlander (On The Lot): Directing has gotten a lot more normal, but writing is a struggle since we don’t have much time to write a good script. I missed my best friend’s wedding to be here this past weekend. The wedding was for guy I grew up, with so I wanted to do something wedding related for him. We have been talking about all the prep work that goes into a wedding and I wanted to do a fun take on it. I like to do something very simple with 2 people in a room but there was a lot there. Anyone who is marred or in a relationship is something everyone can relate to.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): What did you think of the judge’s critique?
A. Sam Friedlander (On The Lot): Again I judged it on audience reaction . This was one of biggest audience reactions I have had for one of my films. I am not only here to please the judges I am here to please the audience. I did think this was first time the judges were too hard on my film and maybe a bit out of line. I felt like it was a bit harsh.
Q. Mark (RealityWanted.com): What was your favorite short (besides your own) from last week:?
A. Sam Friedlander (On The Lot): I loved Will’s and Jason’s. Will’s was a clever and fun little piece.
