Fat March - Jami Lyn Gets Personal

Howdy! Jami Lyn here. Just wanted to be one of the “Marchers” to add a little extra to the story. Let me start off by saying, being on Fat March was an absolute honor. It truly was a journey of a lifetime. I found strength in myself and others that will be with me forever. So THANK YOU for watching and following our story.

Enough with the “inspiriational vomit stuff”…let’s move on to the good stuff! ha

Let me start right off the bat with Kim, AKA Fatabulous. I figure she is on the forefront of many of your minds….or maybe her 10 minutes of air time was more than enough for you to know you don’t ever want to know more! I think the producers/editors, did a great job of putting her story out there. Nothing was twisted, and no one made her say or do the things she said and did. The first few days of Fat March were GRUELLING. But remember, it was gruelling for all of us, and the rest of us didn’t quit. Yes, Kim had blisters, chaffing, toenail loss….and she….gasp….slept in a TENT! Newsflash, honey, we ALL did. Chantal lost 3 toenails within the first few weeks, Anthony walked on blood blisters the size of coasters, as did the rest of the group, and we ALL had our fair share of chaffing. Gross, painful, agonizing chaffing…lol What wasn’t seen that first day was myself and several other marchers set Kim’s tent up for her so she wouldn’t have to do it herself, knowing she would be tired and cranky as soon as she got to the campsite. NONE of us knew we would be camping when we set off that fateful day at the Boston Marathon, but already we knew Kim would be upset. So as a team, we did what we could to be as accommedating as possible. On a “pat myself on the back” moment, I helped set up 6 tents that day - being a country girl from the South finally paid off! Thank you, daddy, for years of tent camping. We all did all we could to try and keep Kim happy. The fact is, that wasn’t going to happen. Kim had the physical ability to complete the task in front of her. She didn’t have the drive. Steve was NOTHING but amazing to her and the rest of the Marchers. There is no way to help someone who is not willing to step outside their comfort zone and see what they are REALLY made of. Kim, we saw what you were really made of.

ENOUGH with that - onto Shane. Awww, Shane. What an amazing man. Never has one person inspired me so fully within minutes of knowing them. He radiates strength, courage and commitment. Shane brought us together as a group and I personally thank him for making Fat March what it was. There isn’t one Marcher who didn’t want Shane with us. We would have walked 200 extra miles for him. But the fact is, his feet weren’t going to take him to DC, and we had to make the agonizing choice of keeping him there for our own selfish reasons, or send him home so his body could heal and he could continue his journey safely. The March wasn’t set out for his body to handle, (any of our bodies, really) and we loved him enough to let him go. I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Shane can walk on water….he just couldn’t walk on those rocks. Thank you, Shane, for two amazing weeks - the world now knows what you are made of, and it was an honor.

As for the rest of us - you’ll have to keep watching to see! Next week, you’ll get to see us battle with food choices. Nothing like offering a bunch of FAT people pizza! Whatever will we do?? The first episode was just the beginning.

Behind the scenes, our bodies are adjusting to fewer calories, WALKING, better food, WALKING, the infamous water, WALKING, sleeping on the ground in the snow and rain, and WALKING. As a group we were rewriting musicals, bandaging sore and broken feet, applying cream to places no one should have to, getting used to liking chicken and brown rice and oatmeal, lots and lots of oatmeal, playing board games when there was time, learning to stretch, and trying to rest our bodies the best we could in a tent.

Our personalities are meshing as well as can be expected.

Wendy was writing her “Walk On By” song (that happens to be my MySpace profile song), and letting us know she has the voice of an angel. We are also seeing she is as querky and spirited as any one woman can get.

Michael was being a “dad” and making sure we were all up and ready to go on time…like all dads he was getting irritated with constant whining and Chantal’s daily question of “where’s breakfast” As Michael would say “It’s right there - where it ALWAYS is, everyday!”. OH, and he snores - I mean REALLY snores - he single handedly kept the bears away.

Loralie was lighting us up with her insane humor and “inuindos”, that girl is FULL of personality….and she has the cutest little snore, won’t keep the bears away, but too cute.

Shea was taking her place as the strong leader and letting us all know she has the most infectious laugh - her and Loralie together are unstoppable! Shea is reserved and still taking us all in. You can tell she is one that WILL be admired.

Matt was keeping us real - we were learning he is a man that has to be respected. Am I the only one who noticed how attractive he is?

Sam was making us laugh with his insane random thoughts - out of know where, he just says things that make no sense because his brillant mind is moving so fast. He also packed scissors - thank GOD Sam brought scissors! They came in so handy for taking off the sleeves of our shirts.

Anthony was keeping Showtunes alive and figuring out he and Will are probably NOT going to get along. There’s definitely a feud brewing! Anthony showed us ALL that if you want it, you can get it - he walked so far and hard to catch back up with the group. He (literally) stepped up to the plate.
Will got his socks and shoes on!!

Chantal is trying to let us all know she is not a quitter and therefore is trying to get in the front and stay there. She isn’t trying to make us laugh yet, she wants her to take her seriously - as a competitor and walker - this girl means BUSINESS!

Steve and Lorrie are trying to adjust to dealing with 12 overweight people - good thing they are trained to do it! Steve’s spirit lights up a room, and right away we all knew we would love him. He is THE most genuine human I have ever met - you know it as soon as you see him, so we were all in love. Lorrie has enough energy for us all - which is good, because we are going to need it! They are educating us daily, motivating us every minute and figuring out this is gonna be a lot tougher than we all thought it would be!

As for me, I was being the “mother” and cleaning up around camp, helping put socks and shoes on, giving foot massages, wearing tank tops that were too tight (that’s for you two, Shea and Loralie), and trying to figure out where I fit in with this AMAZING group of walkers.

We had our fair share of successes and pitfalls. It was a wonderful ride…wait, I mean wonderful WALK - hope you’ll stay on it with us!

Always,
Jami Lyn

  3. AWWWW!!!! What an awesome recap! Jami Lynn you have a wonderful peaceful energy that comes through in your writing that is infectious!!! It must be the mom in you. Thank you for echoing what was already made clear about Kim in that first episode. I love hearing about the extra behind the scene team work that went into helping to make the march comfortable for her & believe me it was clear that she didnt belong on this journey. I personally thought the episode was edited perfectly in regard to her, this coming from a background in television production. Also, thank you for giving us your perspective on the rest of the group! I can hardly wait to watch the next episode! And I am going to Phoenix in 4 days & I will have the privilege of meeting with Lorrie Henry while I am there! I am so excited! Thanks again for your most excellent recap. YOU ROCK!!!!
