Interview with Leslie Nease from CBSs Survivor China
Author's web site:
Last Friday I spoke with Leslie Nease, the 3rd contestant eliminated from Survivor China. Leslie has auditioned for SURVIVOR every season for the past five years. She always wanted to experience SURVIVOR for herself and decided she wasn’t giving up.
She currently resides in Tega Cay, South Carolina with her husband of 18 years, Rod. They have one dog, Buddy. Her birth date is March 25, 1969.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: What got you interested in doing Survivor China?
A. Leslie: I was watching the finale of season 3 which was shot in Africa. It looked miserable for the cast but after the show ended they all said they would do it again. After I watched how hard it was for the cast and the fact that they all said they would return and do it again, something clicked in me so I started to audition.
Q. Mark: Were you fearful or afraid to try it out?
A. Leslie: I have always had a fear of heights so I went skydiving to face my fears. I knew Survivor would be difficult but I had to give it a try.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: I was going to ask if you had watched prior seasons but you did say you watched season 3. Have you seen prior seasons?
A. Leslie: I have watched Survivor since season one.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: What is it like to go from a fan to being on the show?
A. Leslie: It is surreal; I spent the first day giggling. I kept telling myself, “Leslie you’re on Survivor”, it was crazy and a blessing.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: What was it like to live out there with limited food and shelter, could you even sleep?
A. Leslie: Hunger was not that big of an issue, thirst was a big problem and so was the lack of sleep. I got sick on day three and I was sick for most of the time I was there,. I tried to hide it.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: Was it hard to live/sleep with Jean-Robert? Jean kept moving in on your personal space to stay warm.
A. Leslie: Jean is such a big guy and kind of obnoxious about it, but he is a great guy. He doesn’t seem to understand people or know his space at times. I feel bad at how it came across on TV but out there you need to be aware of how you treat others. He was snoring loudly right in my ear. I don’t think he was trying to be annoying; he is a big teddy bear.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: Did you find out anything from watching last night’s show about yourself or your tribe mates?
A. Leslie: Yes, I found out why I was voted off finally. I had been wondering what I did. I wondered if I was I too outspoken about faith. I was shocked at how I was voted off. It was closure, I realized they didn’t trust me but they should have. They did not show that Todd and Amanda asked me to be in a 5 person alliance. I would have been true to them, but Aaron did not trust me, he was upset at how good I got along at the other tribe. The other tribe got along so well and I wanted to take that back to the tribe and try and get all of us to get along as well as they did.
The other tribe was easier to be around. It’s not they were Christian like everyone is saying, that bugs me. They were just good people to be around. Dave seemed to be the hardest to hang out with. I did not say anything bad about my tribe and most of what I said they already knew since Jamie had already told them. I think I only gave away that Aaron was the leader but I think they already knew. I don’t think that that matters in the game
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: Do you ever go online and read about yourself and the show in forums?
A. Leslie: Initially, I did look, but now I don’t, people are too vicious. When I walked out of the temple welcome ceremony on episode one the online message boards were lit up. I did what I thought was right for me. I did not mean to make an international statement.
Was it worship I don’t know, I’m not here to say I know much about Buddhism but it looked like worship. It’s hard to see the hatred so I stopped going on the message boards.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: We talked a bit about Dave earlier. Did Dave’s choice of attire at the reward challenge bother you?
A. Leslie: I just kind of thought I didn’t understand it and chalked it up to strategy. I assumed Dave decided to get naked so some of the guys would not want to come up to him since his package was hanging out.
It was silly and then I thought “oh my god my kids are going to see this.” It’s funny that this Christian woman finally landed a spot on Survivor but I felt like I was on “Survivor Gone Wild”
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: No kidding ,this year seemed to be a bit more hand to hand and clothes keep coming off. Last week you guys were mud wrestling.
A. Leslie: I have never seen a Survivor that had so many ½ naked hand to hand combat challenges. I was so glad Ashley just picked me up last week and then threw me down. When she came at me I said “Oh lord Jesus please help me.”I said to myself, don’t try and fight her. Ashley did apologize later.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: Were you surprised your tribe booted you? And who do you think should have gone home?
A. Leslie: I had a feeling something was up, but I had bonded with Courtney and she was not in my alliance. I assumed my tribe was being strange since they wanted to boot her and they knew we had such a strong bond.
Q. What did you think about James comment? James said something like you weren’t going to last long. He said the ones who pray the most are the ones who need to cause “they is going to hell!”
A. Leslie: I think he meant those that pray a lot do the most wrong. He was right in a way since we all have sinned but when a devout Christian does we are put under a bigger microscope.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: What did you learn/walk away with after this experience?
A. Leslie: There is so much, I learned I need to get out of my Christian bubble more than I am now. It was cool to go to the real world, very cool.
Mark: Thanks a ton for your time and please keep in touch.
