Yesterday Carrie and I had the chance to sit down and chat with Curtis and Mallory from this season Biggest loser Couples. Curtis and Mallory talked about what lead up to their weight gain, their experience on the show, and provided some tips dieting and exercise.

Q. Carrie, RealityWanted.com: How did you both find yourself on The Biggest Loser? Was it because you were you fans of the show and decided you wanted to give it a shot?

A. Curtis, Biggest Loser Couples: I have always been a fan of the show and after I watched season 3 I started to find out how to apply.

Q. Mark, Realitywanted.com: Was this a single or joint decision to apply.

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: It was a single decision not a joint decision. I watched The Biggest Loser and really enjoyed it. Curtis came in one day and told me he was headed down to the audition to apply. When Curtis puts his mind to something I know he will accomplish it. Low and behold they were casting couples so it was a perfect fit, I had just planned to workout at home while he was away.

Q. Carrie: How has it helped having someone else along on this journey (making the lifestyle changes as a couple) as opposed to past attempts on your own?

A. Curtis, Biggest Loser Couples: It was definitely great to have Mallory with me, it was nice to be able to encourage and bounce ideas off each other.

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: We like to work on things together all of the time. I think it would have been hard if Curtis had gone on The Biggest Loser without me and had come home with a head full of training and nutrition experience while I was home at training alone.

Q. Carrie, RealityWanted.com: While on the show, was there a major epiphany moment?

*For instance, after years of battling weight, losing and gaining, what was the “lightbulb” moment on the show (either something a trainer, therapist, doctor, etc said or did) that made you finally say, “YES, I can do this, I need to get things under control.”

A. Curtis, Biggest Loser Couples: I have been working on this for a long time. I suppose my epiphany moments were when I could not fit into a roller coaster chair, sit in a booth, and had to cram into an airline seat. I knew I had to do something which is why I started reading blogs and checking out online support groups. I knew I needed to learn more about nutrition and I wanted a trainer but it wasn’t in the budget. I did know I had the ability to learn all of this and implement it on my own.

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: For me, I just started to burn out on food. Food become a recreation, I would eat just to eat. I would drink so much soda that I would shake and drop things. I needed a pushy female to boss me around and make me start training harder.

Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: I am a huge fan of the show. What would you say to fans of the show that have never had to battle weight loss problems?

A. Curtis, Biggest Loser Couples: I think a lot of people that don’t have weight problems aren’t aware of how it sneaks up on you. You get into a routine of having a few beers each day after work or hit the buffet every Thursday and then you look in the mirror and wonder how you got so fat.

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: You don’t realize how poorly you’re eating until you see the static’s. You then realize how many calories you are eating and how hard it will be to lose that weight. It’s basically overindulgence and not paying attention to your diet that leads to being overweight.

Q. Carrie, RealityWanted.com: Can you give us a sample of your typical day at the campus? What about at home? How many hours a day did you work out at home, something a lot of people are wondering, especially those who have children like you do.

A. Curtis, Biggest Loser Couples: It was truly a five to six hour daily workout.

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: We worked out daily for five to six hours sweating, cooking, and eating healthy.

Q. Carrie, RealityWanted.com: “What was the most difficult part of losing weight on your own after the show?”

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: While we were on the Biggest Loser campus we realized the hardest part was getting into a routine. We also realized we had to take care of ourselves first.

Q. Carrie, RealityWanted.com: What’s the biggest or best lesson or instruction you learned at the campus that helped you to continue your weight loss at home?

A. Curtis, Biggest Loser Couples: Your success comes from within and you can’t use the excuse that your kids need you or you have other things to do that are more important. You need to put yourself first. I failed losing weight before because I would place other things in my life before my health and weight loss. If you don’t put your health first you won’t be around to spend time with others.

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: You have to stay away from the fast foods or having other people prepare your foods. People think cooking healthy takes longer and costs too much, that is what I once thought and I realized it’s the opposite. Our family can now drink one bottle of cranberry juice over a two week period. We also drink more water during meals vs. soda. We practice portion control and don’t buy junk food.

Q. Carrie, RealityWanted.com: “Do you think you would have been able to lose the weight without your experience on The Biggest Loser?”

A. Curtis, Biggest Loser Couples: No, I can honestly say that.

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: I might have but it might have taken much longer to accomplish the weight loss. I would also say no, because I would not have been working out at the level I do now. Truth be told, if you have that much weight to lose you can’t go to the gym only 20 minutes twice a week. We used to go to the gym and think that once we break a sweat we are working out too hard, now we sweat the entire time were working out.

Q. Carrie, RealityWanted.com: How do you plan to maintain your results?

A. Curtis, Biggest Loser Couples: We now have that desire and we are both sill on a natural high since we know how to get a good workout.

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: We will never change our new lifestyle, we kicked the need for sweets and junk. It has been a few months now since we were on the show and we have adjusted to the new healthy lifestyle.

Q. Carrie, RealityWanted.com: “If someone was sitting at home thinking ‘I could never do that, what would you say to them

A. Curtis, Biggest Loser Couples: I would tell people the biggest hurdle that kept me from losing weight was not knowing what I was capable of doing. When you see our results at home you see what we are capable of doing. You have to get over the fear that it’s too hard or too expensive. I would tell people at home to make small changes in their diet and workouts. If you do two sit ups today try three tomorrow and four the next day.

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: Make small changes even if it’s just giving up salt as a first step. I loved adding salt to food so we went to a reduced salt substitute and later stopped adding salt all together. I also started skipping the days that I would have a soda. I would have a soda on Monday but then skip having one on Tuesday and eventually eliminated soda from my diet all together.

Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: Any hard feeling for being voted off when the yellow team clearly indulged in the temptation challenge?

A. Curtis, Biggest Loser Couples: We have absolutely no hard feelings towards anyone on the show. It was a very tough week for us and we have no regrets. The other teams felt Mallory and I were strong enough to lose weight at home and we were honored they felt that way.

A. Mallory, Biggest Loser Couples: I agree with Curtis, we have no ill feelings after being eliminated. It was fair since our percentage change in weight loss just wasn’t there.
